Few Indian actors have built careers as varied as Ravi Kishan’s. He is a two-term Member of Parliament, one of the defining stars of Bhojpuri cinema, a familiar face in Hindi and South Indian films, and an actor whose acclaimed performance in ‘Laapataa Ladies’ brought him a new level of critical recognition more than three decades after he entered the industry. His career has taken him from regional superstardom and reality television to Bollywood, streaming platforms, and national politics. Today, he occupies the unusual position of being both a prominent political figure and an actor whose career appears to be entering another important phase. 

From Village Roots To The Mumbai Dream 

The distance between his beginnings and the stature he enjoys today is remarkable. Born Ravindra Shyamnarayan Shukla on 17 July 1969 in Bombay, Kishan was the youngest child of a priest whose family roots lay in Kerakat, in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district. His father ran a dairy business in the city, but when it collapsed, the family returned to its village. Kishan has spoken of living in a mud house and of a single pot of watered-down khichdi being stretched to feed a large family. His father wanted him to choose a dependable life, perhaps farming, selling milk, or securing a government job. Acting belonged to another universe. Yet it was this unlikely ambition that would eventually take Kishan from a village in Uttar Pradesh to film sets across India, the national spotlight, and Parliament.
