The distance between his beginnings and the stature he enjoys today is remarkable. Born Ravindra Shyamnarayan Shukla on 17 July 1969 in Bombay, Kishan was the youngest child of a priest whose family roots lay in Kerakat, in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district. His father ran a dairy business in the city, but when it collapsed, the family returned to its village. Kishan has spoken of living in a mud house and of a single pot of watered-down khichdi being stretched to feed a large family. His father wanted him to choose a dependable life, perhaps farming, selling milk, or securing a government job. Acting belonged to another universe.
