Photograph Movie Review: Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s nuanced performance lifts up this tale of love and existential angst


Photograph is the biggest release of the week. The film starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra is an unusual love story between a CA topper and a photographer who meet for the first time on the Gateway of India. This is Ritesh Batra’s big project in Hindi after The Lunchbox. Shot extensively in Mumbai, it is a tale of love, existential angst and hope. This is the filmmaker’s second collaboration with Nawaz after The Lunchbox.

What is it about….

Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox was a beautifully crafted story of love, loss and longing expressed through letters. Six years later, he is back with Photograph, an unusual love story starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra. Their lives are as different as they can be. He is a photographer on Gateway of India barely making his ends meet after paying off the family debts while she is a CA topper from a reasonably well to do Gujarati family. They meet at Mumbai’s iconic monument and circumstances force Rafi (Nawaz) to seek Miloni (Sanya) again. The two develop feelings for one another as Miloni masquerades as Noorie, Rafi’s girlfriend for his Daadi (Farrukh Jaffer) who is blackmailing him for marriage.

What’s hot…

The biggest takeaway is Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance. He has the best-written character and digs into it with gusto.
