After Stephen King, John Grisham and Alistair MacLean, it’s best-selling author Tom Clancy who Hollywood routinely looks towards for adaptation to both film and TV shows/web series. The Hunt for Red October (1990) is still hard to be for either pure quality as far as espionage thrillers go in general, leave alone in the Clancy cinematic franchise, or just for bang-for-your-buck suspense, and frankly, your expectations would be fraught with disappointment even if you’d go in expecting another Tom Clancy movie to be in the same league. But how does Without Remorse a rare non-Jack-Ryan feature fare among the celebrated writer’s other popular adaptations, particularly, The Hunt for Red October (1990), Patriot Games (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Sum of All Fears (2002), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) or the new Jack Ryan web series. Well, the action is actually better than almost anything you’d have seen in the aforementioned titles save for one or two sequences in Shadow Recruit. Sadly, the plot here is the weakest of the lot. Fortunately, Michael B. Jordan’s charisma and the action set piece are just about enough to pull the movie through.
