Alia Bhatt has reportedly begun work on Tumbbad 2, adding further anticipation around the upcoming sequel to the 2018 folk horror film. Bhatt, who was officially announced as part of the franchise in July, was recently spotted on the sets alongside the film’s team.
Photos from the sets show Alia in a casual avatar. The actor was seen wearing an oversized striped shirt, with her hair tied back in a high ponytail, as she posed with members of the crew. According to reports, Bhatt visited the sets during the ongoing shooting schedule, which is said to include sequences set around a river and an old fort.
The development comes soon after the makers confirmed Alia’s addition to the cast. Actor-producer Sohum Shah welcomed her to the franchise through social media, announcing, “The world of Tumbbad expands, a new chapter takes shape, e are delighted to welcome @aliaabhatt to the cast of #Tumbbad2.”
Bhatt’s casting marks her first full-fledged project in the horror genre. She is set to share screen space with Sohum Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who has also been confirmed for an important role in the sequel. However, the filmmakers have maintained secrecy around the characters and major plot details. Siddiqui’s role is expected to have a significant place in the narrative, while Alia’s presence is likely to bring a new element to the folklore-driven story.
Directed by Adesh Prasad and led by Sohum Shah, Tumbbad 2 is expected to further explore the mythology established in the first film. The sequel will reportedly continue to examine themes of greed, fear and human nature while taking the story into a new chapter.
