After the success of Lust Stories and Lust Stories 2, the franchise returns with its third instalment, and thankfully, it doesn’t feel like it is simply trying to recreate what worked before. Lust Stories 3 takes the anthology route once again but gives each filmmaker enough room to bring a distinct flavour to the table. The biggest strength of the new chapter is its variety. One story is uncomfortable and unconventional, another is breezy and playful, the third digs into the messy side of marriage, while the fourth takes us back to the 1980s. Yet, they all circle around desire, intimacy and the complicated ways in which people connect. Vikramaditya Motwane’s segment, featuring Radhika Apte, Konkona Sensharma, Vijay Varma and Abhishek Sharma, immediately stands apart. The subject of husband swapping could easily have become sensational, but the Korean fiction influence gives the story an unusual narrative texture. The cast also handles the awkwardness and tension without making it feel forced. Kiran Rao goes in a completely different direction with Gurfateh Pirzada and Sana Thampi. This one is lighter on its feet and plays like a fun con story involving drugs and money. There are enough twists to keep you engaged, including a rather unexpected turn that adds a nice dose of masala. Shakun Batra’s segment with Ali Fazal and Radhika Madan is more emotionally layered. Marriage, lust, therapy, parental pressure and divorce all become part of a larger conversation about what happens when a relationship stops being as simple as it once seemed. Vishal Bhardwaj brings the most distinct period flavour with Aditi Rao Hydari, Sidharth and Gajraj Rao.
