There are movies designed to entertain, movies designed to thrill, and then there are rare, soul-stirring pieces of cinema that quietly touch your soul and grab you by the heart. National Award-winning filmmaker Vinod Kapri’s Pyre seems to be that one film! At least, this is the most gut-wrenching trailer I have seen this year, without a shred of doubt! it is the most emotionally devastating and heartbreaking thing I’ve watched in this entire year.
Set against the breathtaking yet unforgiving backdrop of the Kumaon region in Uttarakhand, the film promises to tell a raw and unfiltered story of love, aging, and profound loneliness. The greatest triumph of the trailer lies in its casting. Instead of polished Bollywood actors playing old age with prosthetic makeup, Vinod Kapri introduces Padam Singh Kapri (an 80-year-old retired Indian Army serviceman playing a character named after himself) and Heera Devi (a 70-year-old local resident playing Tulsi).
The trailer does a masterclass job of shifting tones. It opens with endearing, earthy moments between the elderly, sharing lighthearted banter, everyday chores, and gentle giggles that prove romance doesn’t fade with time; it simply deepens. But right underneath those comforting laughs lies an unbearable, crushing sorrow: their son, who has been away from home for a long time, and his absence has become haunting!
